Esther Barnhart was born in Quincy, Massachusetts and raised in Weymouth, Massachusetts. After graduating from Tufts University, she worked for several years as assistant director of gerontological research in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating from Boston College Law School, she worked as staff attorney and later as director of the senior citizens law project in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1982, she moved to Mid-coast Maine with her family.

Esther is a shareholder of Strout & Payson, P.A. and has been with the firm since 1982. Esther concentrates her practice on estate planning, elder law, probate, and real estate.
